Providing an Introduction to a Paragraph (ORG 403)

A paragraph's opening sentence announces the job the rest of the paragraph does; it is not the most dramatic or detailed sentence, but the one that frames what is coming.

A paragraph has a job: explain a mechanism, report a change, describe a trend. Every sentence after the first one is doing that job, one piece at a time. The opener's task is different. It has to name the job itself, so the reader knows what the details that follow are details of. Read a paragraph's body first, ask what all these sentences are doing together, and that shared job, stated as one sentence, is the opener.

This is why the most interesting or most specific sentence in the group is almost never the right opener. A vivid detail is still just one step inside the job, not a statement of the job. If a paragraph's body describes a seed pod drying, straining, and splitting, the most dramatic line might be the one about seeds flying meters away. But that sentence is the payoff of the mechanism, not the announcement of it. The opener has to sit above the steps: something like 'a pod opens by building a stress its own seam cannot survive' tells you the whole paragraph is about to explain a buildup-and-release mechanism, and then the steps fall into place under that frame.

This skill sits right next to deciding where a paragraph should split and how an essay's opening or closing paragraph should work. The logic is the same at every level: a good opening unit, whether sentence or paragraph, states the job the unit below it performs, so a reader never has to guess what they're being shown until they've already been shown it.

The rest of a paragraph reads: 'Heat dries the outer wall unevenly. The two halves pull against each other along a seam. When the tension passes what the seam can hold, the pod splits and throws its seeds 7 meters.' Which choice is the best opening sentence for this paragraph?
