ACT® · Science: The Three Passage Formats
Which Reporting Category Each Format Feeds
Each science passage format is built to supply certain reporting categories and not others: Data Representation and Research Summaries mostly feed Interpretation of Data and Scientific Investigation, while only Conflicting Viewpoints carries Evaluation of Models.
The science test sorts every question into one of three reporting categories: Interpretation of Data, Scientific Investigation, or Evaluation of Models, Inferences and Experimental Results. Which category a question belongs to is decided by the skill the question actually demands, not by which passage it sits on or how sciencey the passage looks. A passage built entirely of graphs and tables, with no procedure described, can only generate questions about reading those graphs and tables. There is no method to question, so Scientific Investigation items have nothing to attach to. That passage is Data Representation, and it feeds Interpretation of Data almost exclusively.
Research Summaries passages describe one or more experiments: setup, variables, trials. Most questions on them still just ask you to read a value off a table or chart, which makes them Interpretation of Data even though an experiment is sitting right there. Only questions that ask why a variable was controlled, what a different setup would show, or how to improve the design count as Scientific Investigation, because those questions test reasoning about method, not data retrieval. An item attached to an experiment is not automatically a Scientific Investigation item; check what skill it is actually asking for.
Conflicting Viewpoints passages present two or three competing explanations for one phenomenon, with no data tables at all. Because the whole point of that format is presenting models to be understood and judged against each other, it is the only place Models-Understanding and Models-Evaluating questions appear. Across a full form, the three formats together guarantee all three categories show up: Data Representation and Research Summaries supply the data and investigation questions, Conflicting Viewpoints supplies the model questions.
Key terms
- Interpretation of Data
- The reporting category covering questions that ask you to read, translate, or extract values from a graph or table.
- Scientific Investigation
- The reporting category covering questions about experimental design, variables, controls, and methodology.
- Evaluation of Models, Inferences and Experimental Results
- The reporting category covering questions that ask you to understand, compare, or judge scientific models or viewpoints.
- apex skill
- The single highest-level skill a question actually requires, which determines its reporting category regardless of passage format.
- Conflicting Viewpoints
- The passage format presenting two or three competing explanations for one phenomenon, with no data tables.
