Slope from an Equation

The slope of a line is the coefficient of x once the equation is solved for y. Until then, standard form Ax + By = C hides the real slope, which is -A/B, not A.

A line written as y = mx + b tells you everything at a glance: m is the slope, the rate y changes for every one-unit step in x. A bigger m means a steeper climb, a negative m means the line falls as x grows, and m = 0 means it's flat. But most equations don't arrive in this friendly form. They show up as Ax + By = C, called standard form, where the slope is buried inside the relationship between A and B, not sitting plainly in front of x.

To expose it, solve for y. Take 4x + 2y = 10. Subtract 4x from both sides to get 2y = -4x + 10, then divide everything by 2: y = -2x + 5. Now the slope is -2, not the 4 that was originally in front of x. That division step is where the sign and the size of the slope actually get set, which is why standard form is deceptive if you read it too fast.

This skill is the gateway to the rest of linear work: writing equations from two points, checking whether lines are parallel (equal slopes) or perpendicular (negative reciprocal slopes), and graphing quickly without a table of values. Once slope-from-equation is automatic, questions about parallel and perpendicular lines, or about rewriting equations in different forms, become quick algebra rather than new ideas.

Key terms

Slope
The rate at which y changes for each one-unit increase in x.
Slope-intercept form
The equation written as y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.
Standard form
A line written as Ax + By = C, where the slope is not directly visible.
Coefficient
The number multiplying a variable, such as the 4 in 4x.

  1. How it worksHow does rearranging 4x + 2y = 10 into y = mx + b expose the slope immediately?
  2. Worked exampleFind the slope of the line 6x - 3y = 12 without plotting a single point.
  3. Common mistakeWhy isn't the slope of 4x + 2y = 10 equal to 4 when the 4 is right there in front of x?
  4. Worked exampleFind the slope of the line 5x + 4y = 20 and say which way it tilts.
