Style and Tone Deviations That Are Subtle (KLA 503)

A subtle tone break is one word that's a half-step off the essay's register, not a slang word that jumps off it entirely. Find the register from the surrounding sentences, then pick the choice that matches it exactly.

Every essay sits at a register: formal, conversational, technical. That register is set by word choice across several sentences, not by any single word. So before you judge an underlined word, read the three sentences around it and ask what kind of word this writer reaches for elsewhere. A casual word stands out hardest inside a formal paragraph precisely because everything around it has trained your ear to expect restraint. One slip is loud because it's the only note off pitch; a whole casual sentence just sounds like a different song, which is easier to dismiss as a style choice rather than a mistake.

Picture register as a dial, not a cliff. A subtle break nudges the needle slightly: 'examined' slides to 'checked out', which is noticeably more casual but not slang. It never jumps to something wild. That's why the wrong answers on this kind of question are usually ordinary, reasonable-sounding words, not obviously silly ones. You're not hunting for an error that announces itself. You're comparing small shades of formality and picking the word that sits exactly where the rest of the essay sits.

This connects directly to word choice and concision questions nearby: a short plain word like 'used' is not automatically a violation, because formal writing still favors clarity over inflating syllables. The one exception is quoted speech. If an essay quotes someone talking casually, the words inside the quotation marks can stay casual, since they belong to that speaker, not to the essay's own narrating voice.
