Binary, Ternary, and Larger Forms

Binary form has two sections that don't return, while ternary form leaves and comes back, A-B-A. That return of the opening material is what makes a piece feel finished.

Form is the map of a piece's large sections, each one usually built from phrases and periods, each one usually closing with a cadence. Binary form has two sections, A and B, often each repeated, and the piece does not return to A at the end. Ternary form has three sections, A-B-A, so the piece departs for contrasting material and then comes home. That homecoming is what makes ternary form feel resolved in a way plain binary does not: the listener gets a recognizable arrival back at familiar ground after the detour of B, and a completed round trip reads as closure.

A special case called rounded binary blurs the line between the two. It is still labeled binary because it keeps the two-part repeat structure of binary form, but inside the second part the opening A material comes back after B, so it sounds like a miniature ternary design: A, then B leading into a return of A, often shortened. Larger forms stack these same building blocks. A piece running A, A, B, A plus a coda is a rounded binary or small ternary design extended with a final closing passage that is not a full new section but a tail that confirms the ending after the structural return.

Cadences mark the end of phrases and periods, and those periods are the bricks that build each lettered section. A half cadence or imperfect authentic cadence often closes an opening phrase, inviting continuation, while a strong authentic cadence closes a section and signals that one letter's worth of music is complete. Hearing where those strong cadences fall is how you find the section boundaries and assign the letters in the first place.

Key terms

Binary form
A two-section form, A and B, usually each repeated, without a return to A at the end.
Ternary form
A three-section form, A-B-A, where the opening material returns after a contrasting middle section.
Rounded binary
A binary form whose second part restates the opening A material after the B material, blending binary structure with a ternary-like return.
Coda
A closing passage added after the form's final section to confirm the ending rather than present new structural material.
Cadence
A harmonic arrival that closes a phrase or section with varying degrees of finality.

Watch it explained

  1. How it worksHow do binary and ternary forms differ in what a listener is left holding at the end?
  2. How it worksWalk me through a rounded binary form where the opening material returns inside the second half.
  3. Worked exampleFind the form of a piece whose sections run A, A, B, A followed by a coda.
  4. Ties togetherHow do cadences and periods stack up into the large sections of a whole form?

Your turn1 of 2
A rounded binary form's second half restates the opening A material after some contrasting B material. If the A section lasts 7 measures, the B section lasts 7 measures, and the returning A material at the end lasts 6 measures, how many total measures does the rounded binary form contain?
