The Reflex Arc
A reflex arc is a direct pathway from sensory neuron to interneuron to motor neuron inside the spinal cord, so your muscles react before your brain even registers what happened.
Touch a hot stove and your hand yanks back almost instantly, well before you feel the burn. That speed is the point. A reflex arc is built to skip the brain entirely for the first response. A sensory neuron picks up the painful stimulus at your fingertips and carries that signal up into the spinal cord. There it connects to an interneuron, a short relay neuron living inside the spinal cord, which immediately passes the signal to a motor neuron. The motor neuron fires and tells the muscles in your arm to contract, pulling your hand away. Three neurons, one spinal cord, no brain required.
This is exactly why the brain is not the one giving the order. The sensory signal does travel upward to the brain too, which is how you eventually feel the pain and consciously notice what happened, but that message arrives after the muscle has already moved. The spinal cord handles the urgent decision locally because waiting for a round trip to the brain and back would cost precious milliseconds, time that matters when tissue is being damaged.
The interneuron is the structural bottleneck of the whole arc. It is the only link between incoming sensory information and outgoing motor commands, so if it is damaged, the reflex fails or weakens badly even when the sensory and motor neurons on either side work fine. This topic sits right after the neuron itself: the reflex arc is simply a small, fast circuit built from the same sensory, inter, and motor neurons, wired together in the simplest possible loop the nervous system can run.
Key terms
- Reflex arc
- The neural pathway of sensory neuron to interneuron to motor neuron that produces an automatic response without brain involvement.
- Sensory neuron
- A neuron that carries signals from sense receptors, such as skin, toward the spinal cord and brain.
- Interneuron
- A short neuron inside the spinal cord that connects sensory input directly to motor output.
- Motor neuron
- A neuron that carries commands from the spinal cord or brain out to muscles, causing them to move.
