One-Step Unit Conversion

One-step unit conversion means multiplying by a fraction equal to 1 — a conversion factor — so the old unit cancels and the new unit remains. Flipping the fraction decides which unit survives.

A conversion factor is just a fact like 100 centimeters = 1 meter, rewritten as a fraction: 1 meter over 100 centimeters. That fraction equals 1, since top and bottom name the same length. Multiplying any measurement by 1 never changes the actual amount, only how it's labeled. So when you multiply a length in centimeters by that fraction, you're not changing the shelf, you're just relabeling it in meters.

The direction you write the fraction controls which unit cancels. Units cancel the same way numbers in fractions do: if centimeters appear on top in your measurement and on the bottom of the conversion factor, they divide out, leaving meters. Flip the fraction upside down, and centimeters would stack on top instead, giving a useless unit like cm2/m. So before multiplying, check which unit needs to sit in the denominator of the conversion factor: whatever unit you're leaving behind.

This is the simplest move in the ratios and derived units family. It sets up everything that follows: rates with two units stacked (like miles per hour), and chains of several conversions multiplied in a row. Once canceling one unit feels automatic, scaling a ratio, converting a rate, or building a derived unit like grams per liter is the same cancellation trick repeated.

Key terms

conversion factor
A fraction equal to 1 built from an equivalence like 100 cm = 1 m, used to relabel a measurement.
cancel
When the same unit appears on top and bottom of a multiplication, it divides out and disappears.
numerator and denominator placement
The unit being left behind must sit in the denominator so it cancels against the measurement's unit.
derived unit
A unit built from a ratio of two other units, such as miles per hour.

  3. Common mistakeWhy isn't converting 5 feet to inches a matter of dividing by 12 instead of multiplying?
