Encomienda, Caste, and Silver
Spain ran its American colonies on forced Native labor and a strict ancestry-based ranking of people, while Potosi silver tied the Americas, Europe, and Asia into one trading system.
The encomienda system let the Spanish crown grant a colonist the right to demand labor and tribute from a set number of Native people in a given area. In theory the encomendero protected those people and taught them Christianity. In practice it was forced labor with no wages: Native workers mined silver, farmed, and built infrastructure, and the profits flowed straight to the Spanish landholder. Disease and brutal conditions killed enormous numbers of Native laborers, which is part of why Spain later turned to enslaved Africans to fill the labor gap, especially in mining and on plantations.
Spain built the casta system to answer a question that mattered enormously to colonial elites: who counts as truly Spanish? Peninsulares, born in Spain, sat at the top and held the best government and church posts. Criollos, Spanish ancestry but born in the Americas, ranked just below, resentful that birthplace alone capped their power. Mestizos, mixed Spanish and Native ancestry, and mulattoes, mixed Spanish and African ancestry, sat lower still, with Native peoples and enslaved Africans at the bottom. Ancestry and birthplace decided your legal status, not your wealth or skill.
Silver tied this whole system to the rest of the planet. Massive deposits at Potosi, high in the Andes, were mined largely with forced Native labor under a system called the mita. Ships carried that silver to Seville, funding the Spanish crown and European trade. Separately, silver crossed the Pacific through Manila, where merchants traded it for Chinese silk and porcelain. One mountain in Bolivia was quietly setting prices in Madrid and Beijing alike, making Spanish America the hinge of the first truly global economy.
