Watch it explained
- How it worksHow does a claim tighten across a text as each paragraph narrows what it is saying?
- How it worksHow do credibility, logic and feeling each carry part of the load in a persuasive text?
- Worked exampleShow me tracing how a claim about street trees narrows from every city to one climate.

Adapted from an essay on urban forestry. 'Every city should plant more street trees. In cities that bake, shade is worth more than carbon: a street under 39 percent canopy runs about 6 degrees cooler on an August afternoon. In hot-dry places the sum changes again, since that canopy costs 135 litres of irrigation per tree each summer week. The case is strongest in hot-humid cities, where the rain pays the water bill.' How does the claim change across the passage?End of topic.
