The ELA Score and the Hidden Conversion
ELA is a separate average of three 1-to-36 scores: English, reading, and a converted writing score. The essay's raw 2 to 12 score never gets averaged directly — it's first translated onto the 1 to 36 scale.
The essay is graded by two readers on four writing domains, each worth 2 to 12 points, and those four domain scores are summed into a raw writing score from 8 to 48. That raw score sits on its own private scale, built for essay grading, not for comparing against English or reading. Before it can mean anything next to those sections, it has to be converted onto the same 1 to 36 scale everything else uses. That conversion is a lookup, not a formula you calculate by hand — the raw 8 to 48 total maps to a 1 to 36 converted writing score.
Once the essay has a 1 to 36 converted score, ELA is simple: average the English score, the reading score, and the converted writing score. Three numbers, one average, each already on the same scale. That's why ELA only exists for students who take the optional essay — without it, there's no third number to average in, and English and reading alone don't combine into an ELA score.
ELA sits alongside the other section scores, but it's not one of the four core sections itself — it's a bonus composite built only when the essay is taken. Skip the essay, and you simply have no ELA score at all; reading and English still report on their own, and the overall composite is built without needing ELA. This separation is also why a strong essay can lift ELA noticeably while leaving English and reading untouched.
