ACT® · The Enhanced ACT: Format, Scoring, and the Clock

The Four Ways to Take the ACT

You can register four ways: core three sections alone, core plus science, core plus the essay, or all four. The core always makes the Composite; science and the essay only ever add extra scores on top.

The exam is built around three sections: English, math and reading. Together they generate the Composite, the single number most people mean when they talk about a score. Science and the essay sit outside that core. They were built as optional add-ons from the start, which is why the test now comes in four shapes depending on what you sign up for: core alone, core plus science, core plus the essay, or core plus both.

Each add-on reports separately rather than folding into the Composite. Register for science and you get a science score plus a combined STEM score, which blends math and science. Register for the essay and you get a writing score plus a combined ELA score, which blends English, reading and writing. Register for both and your report carries every extra on top of the untouched Composite. Skip both and your report is just the core three plus the Composite, nothing more and nothing less.

This structure matters most when you are deciding what to register for. Because science and the essay can only add numbers, not subtract from the Composite, there is no scoring reason to avoid them out of caution. The real question is what a given program wants to see. Knowing which shape you chose explains exactly which numbers will and won't show up on your report, and why two students who both took 'the test' can walk away with reports that look structurally different.
