The Focus and Directrix of a Parabola

A parabola is the set of all points equally distant from a fixed point, the focus, and a fixed line, the directrix. That equal-distance rule is also why parabolic dishes focus every incoming signal to one spot.

A parabola is not just 'a U-shaped curve.' It has an exact definition: pick a point (the focus) and a line (the directrix) that the curve never touches. The parabola is every point in the plane sitting at equal distance from that point and that line. Walk along the curve and measure twice, once straight to the focus, once straight down (or across) to the directrix, and the two distances always match. That balancing act is what forces the curve into its particular bowl shape, tight near the vertex and flaring out as it moves away.

For an equation like x2 = 4ky, the vertex sits at the origin, the focus is at (0, k), and the directrix is the horizontal line y = -k. The number 4k is just whatever coefficient sits in front of y, so you find k by dividing that coefficient by 4. Flip the roles of x and y and the parabola opens sideways instead of up, with the focus on the x-axis and a vertical directrix. This is the payoff of coordinate geometry: a shape defined by a distance rule turns into an equation you can read values straight off of.

This definition is also the reason dish-shaped reflectors work. Every incoming ray traveling straight toward the dish is the same perpendicular distance from the directrix as the point it hits is from the focus, by definition of the curve. Reflecting off the curve at that point sends the ray straight to the focus, and that holds true at every single point on the dish simultaneously, so all the rays converge in one place. It sits naturally after lines and circles in coordinate geometry: same tools, distance and equations, applied to a curve defined by a relationship instead of a fixed radius.

Key terms

Focus
The fixed point inside the curve that every point on the parabola is measured against.
Directrix
The fixed line outside the curve that every point on the parabola is measured against.
Vertex
The point on the parabola exactly halfway between the focus and the directrix.
4k coefficient
The number in front of the linear variable in x2 = 4ky, used to solve for k.
