Inverting Transformed Exponentials and Logs
To invert a transformed exponential or log function, undo each operation in the reverse order it was applied, swapping exponentials for logs or logs for exponentials at the last step.
A function built from a chain of operations gets undone like unwrapping a package: last on, first off. If f(x) = 3·2x-1 + 5 was built by taking x, subtracting 1, raising 2 to that power, multiplying by 3, then adding 5, the inverse must peel those off in the opposite order: subtract 5, divide by 3, take log base 2, then add 1. Each step cancels the matching step in f, so working from the outside in guarantees you land back on x.
To find f−1 for f(x) = 3·2x-1 + 5, write y = 3·2x-1 + 5 and solve for x. Subtract 5: y-5 = 3·2x-1. Divide by 3: (y-5)/3 = 2x-1. Take log base 2 of both sides: log2((y-5)/3) = x-1. Add 1: x = log2((y-5)/3) + 1. Swap x and y to write f−1(x) = log2((x-5)/3) + 1. Notice the shape flipped: a transformed exponential becomes a transformed logarithm, because log base b is defined as the operation that undoes raising b to a power.
This is why exponential and logarithmic functions are always paired: every transformation applied to one shows up, reversed, on the other. A stretch by a factor in the exponential becomes a stretch after taking the log; a shift before the exponent becomes a shift after the log. Once you see inverting as peeling operations off in reverse, this topic connects directly to solving exponential and logarithmic equations, since both ask you to isolate x by undoing the same chain.
Key terms
- Inverse function
- A function that reverses another, so f−1(f(x)) = x for every x in the domain.
- Peeling off operations
- Solving for x by undoing each operation in the reverse order it was applied to build the function.
- Logarithmic form
- The equation logb(x) = y rewritten as the equivalent exponential statement by = x.
- Domain restriction
- The set of input values for which a function is defined, which becomes the range of its inverse.
