The Difficulty Ramp Inside the Conventions Block

The conventions block inside each module always runs easiest to hardest, but that order tells you nothing about which grammar rule is coming next.

Each Reading and Writing module bundles its conventions questions together, and that bundle has a built-in shape: the first item is the easiest, the last is the hardest, and everything in between climbs steadily. That climb is set by difficulty alone. The test writers are not sequencing by rule, so a comma question can sit next to a subject-verb agreement question, which can sit next to a question about transitions. Position tells you how hard a question is expected to be, nothing more.

This trips students up when they try to use position as a clue to content. Seeing commas tested at item six does not mean item seven avoids commas, and reaching the final conventions question does not mean you are facing the single most obscure rule in the set. The last slot is simply the hardest slot that module happens to contain that day; it could easily test a common rule like apostrophes, just written in a trickier, more layered way. The ramp is about difficulty of execution, not rarity of rule.

This matters once the adaptive structure kicks in. If performance on the first module is strong enough to route a student into the harder second module, the conventions block there does not change its logic. It still opens easy and closes hard, and it still draws from the same set of eight rules. What shifts is the band those questions are pulled from: the whole block is pitched higher, so even its easiest item is harder than the easiest item in the lower module.

  1. How it worksHow does the conventions block run easiest to hardest no matter which rule each item happens to test?
  2. Common mistakeWhy isn't the last conventions question in a module necessarily built on the most obscure rule?
  3. Going furtherWhat changes about that ramp when the adaptive second module targets a higher difficulty band?
