The Time Budget for Conventions Questions
Each Reading and Writing module gives 32 minutes for 27 questions, an average of about 71 seconds each. Conventions questions answer faster than that, so the seconds you save on them should get spent on the few Craft and Structure questions that need a slow, second read.
A module hands you 1,920 seconds for 27 questions, which averages to about 71 seconds a question if every question cost the same. They don't. Conventions questions test one grammar or punctuation rule at a time: comma placement, subject-verb agreement, apostrophe use, a transition word. Once you know the rule, the answer is visible in seconds, no full re-read of a dense passage required. That makes these the cheapest points per second on the whole section, and the smart move is to treat them that way on purpose rather than lingering over them out of habit.
The module mixes 11 to 15 conventions items in among Craft and Structure and Information and Ideas questions, not grouped together, so you have to recognize one on sight and shift gears. A conventions question usually shows an underlined portion or a blank with four answer choices that differ only in punctuation or grammar. Spot the pattern, apply the rule, move on in something close to 30 to 45 seconds rather than the roughly 71-second average.
The payoff shows up elsewhere in the module. Every conventions question finished in 30 seconds instead of 71 banks about 40 seconds. Multiply that across 11 to 15 items and you've built a reserve of several minutes. That reserve is exactly what the two or three Craft and Structure questions need, the ones asking about an author's rhetorical purpose or how one paragraph functions relative to another, where a single read-through isn't enough. Budgeting conventions questions tightly is how you pay for those slower, harder reads without running out of time at the end.
