Organization: The Controlling Idea and the Progression
Organization means every paragraph advances one controlling idea, in an order that matters. A template just gives paragraphs a shape; it doesn't decide what order this particular argument needs.
Five paragraphs can each be clean, correct, and well developed, and the essay can still read like a pile. That happens when nothing ties the paragraphs to each other. A controlling idea fixes this: it's the single claim the whole essay is arguing, and every paragraph has to advance it rather than just sit near it. Once that claim exists, the paragraphs stop being separate mini-essays on the same topic and start being parts of one argument.
A controlling idea also forces an order. If paragraph two assumes something paragraph one established, paragraph two can't come first without confusing the reader. Build body paragraphs so each one needs the one before it: maybe the first lays out the strongest case for your position, the second complicates it by weighing the opposing perspective against it, and the third resolves the tension and shows why your position still holds up. Read it backward, mentally, and check whether a paragraph still makes sense without its setup. If it does, nothing was actually built.
This is why a five-paragraph template isn't an organizational strategy by itself. The template is just a container: intro, three bodies, conclusion. Strategy is the decision about which perspective to address first, when to bring in the counterargument, and what order makes the final paragraph feel earned rather than repeated. That decision connects directly to how the essay handles the three given perspectives, since the order you choose is usually the order in which you take them up.
