ACT® · Writing: The Optional Essay and Its Four Domains

Whether to Take the Writing Section at All

The essay is optional and never touches your Composite score. It only exists to create a separate ELA score, which some scholarship programs or schools want and most don't.

The writing section sits apart from everything else you take. English, Math, Reading, and Science combine into your Composite, and the essay is never part of that math. Instead, two graders read your essay and score it on four domains, each from 1 to 6. Those four domain scores get added into a raw total from 8 to 48, and that raw total is converted onto the familiar 1 to 36 scale to become your writing score.

That writing score matters for exactly one other number: ELA. ELA averages your English score, your Reading score, and your converted writing score, then rounds. If you skip the essay, you simply have no ELA score sitting next to your other scores. No harm to English, Math, Reading, or Composite, because writing was never an ingredient in any of them. A shaky essay performance stays quarantined inside ELA.

So the real decision is about audience, not risk. Some scholarship committees, some honors programs, and a handful of schools ask for a writing score, often because they want a writing sample alongside the multiple choice picture of you. If nothing you're applying to asks for it, skipping saves you 40 minutes and changes nothing else. If you registered for the essay and then leave the pages blank, you've spent the time without producing a score, since a blank response typically cannot be scored across the domains the way a real attempt can.
