Strategic Use of Structure in a System

Some systems ask for a combination like x + y or 2x - y, not for x and y themselves. Spotting that lets you add or scale the equations once and read off the answer, skipping full solving.

A system of two equations usually gets solved by finding x and y separately, then plugging them into whatever's asked. But if the question only wants a combination of x and y, like x + y or 2x - y, you can often get there in one move. Add the two equations together. If the result is a clean multiple of the expression you want, divide and you're done. You never learn what x or y actually are, and you don't need to.

The reason this works is that adding equations is just combining true statements into another true statement. If 5x + 3y = 22 and 3x + 5y = 26, adding gives 8x + 8y = 48, which is 8 times (x + y). Divide by 8 and x + y = 6. No substitution, no elimination of a single variable required. The same idea works with one equation alone: if 6x - 3y = 21, notice that 2x - y is exactly a third of 6x - 3y, so 2x - y = 21/3 = 7, straight from the given equation.

This shortcut depends entirely on matching coefficients. It only fires when the target expression is a uniform scale of what you already have, or of what adding the equations produces. Ask for 3x + 2y instead of x + y, and the trick breaks: 3 and 2 aren't equal, so no single multiplication or addition lands on that combination. You'd need to scale each equation by a different factor to line up coefficients, or just solve for x and y outright. Recognizing which case you're in, matched coefficients versus mismatched ones, is the real skill, and it connects directly to elimination, the standard method for solving systems in this unit.

Key terms

system of equations
a set of two or more equations sharing the same variables, solved together.
elimination
a method that adds or subtracts equations, possibly after scaling, to remove a variable.
coefficient
the number multiplying a variable in an expression or equation.
linear combination
a sum of expressions each multiplied by a constant, like 3x + 2y.
